Late June, 1923
My family came to Ohio from Massachusetts.We stop to find food.After Pa came back from hunting empty-handed, he wearily explained how he got so desperate to get food that he even tried to chase the squirrels.That night we gathered some strange-colored berries for dinner.I found the berries by an aged well made from pebbles and mud.Water must have done something funny to the berries...that was almost 79 years ago and I'm still am 14...I look it and feel it.
Later that day...
Anyways, later we went to the ocean for a swim.I dove down under to scoop up a seashell but when I tried to come up to the water's glassy surface, I couldn't come up for air.I don't know how but the water wouldn't let me rise up!Soon Ma, Pa, and even by older brother Sam dove in to pull me up to the surface.They couldn't get up past the water's edge either!We were trapped. We could still breathe, although we'd been trapped underwater nearly 10 minutes.So our lives as nobodies began right there and then.
Later that week,
We lived on fish and seaweed.After so much wear and tear on our clothes, we made new clothes from seaweed.
Early July, 1953
We couldn't come out of the water for about 30 years.So much has changed since then.New cars, new clothes, new everything.
July 11, 1953
Tomorrow we must go back into the water;it's getting hard to breathe on land again.I get ready to wade in.The water is warm and comforting.
30 years later, July 11, 1983.
I get the pattern, we live in water for 30 years, we come back out for a week.I'll never have any friends again;I spotted my friend, Anna, but she didn't know me, and now she's almost 80.It's horrible...She reconizes my face but that's it.
