ROSA PARKS, MY STORY
BY ROSA PARKS WITH JIM HASKINS

Rosa Parks, My story , takes place in Alabama during the 1950’s.
Written by Rosa Parks herself, this book tells about her life during segregation.

Rosa Parks was tough. She was determined and confident. When she was little

she threatened a white boy with a brick because he said he would hit her. This

was unusual because at that time black people were afraid to talk to white people

like that.

One day Rosa Parks was sitting in the black section of a bus. She was in

the front seat of the black section. The bus was segregated, which means that

blacks and whites could not sit together. They also could not eat together, drink

together or get married. A white person got on the bus. The bus driver told Rosa

to give up the seat to the white man, because the white section was full. Rosa

Parks refused to get up. She was tired of giving in to white people. The bus

driver said “if you don’t give up your seat to the white man you will get arrested.”

The cops came and arrested Rosa Parks.

Martin Luther King got involved. He helped Rosa Parks get out of jail. He

told the black people not to ride the buses, so the bus company would not make

any money. The boycott lasted more than a year but it worked. The buses were

no longer segregated.

I would solve the conflict differently. I would send a letter to the President

of the United States of America. I would tell him to stop segregation. I would tell

him how all the Klu Klux Klan are destroying our houses and hurting black

people. I would tell him that white people used to accuse us of crimes we did not

commit. They used to execute blacks unjustly. I would tell the President that we

have the right to eat wherever we want and to go to whatever school we want.

We should have equal education and equal rights.

I enjoyed the book it was very interesting. Rosa Parks had guts to stand

up to the white people. I was amazed that Rosa Parks wrote it herself, because

she is an old woman now. I think it was difficult for her to write because of all the

bad things that happened. I learned that segregation, slavery and racism are

stupid. I believe that everyone has equal rights. I am embarrassed that white

people behaved so badly.
